The New York Yankees showed a lot of pride forcing a Game 5 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but can they keep this improbable run alive for another day on Wednesday?
So you’re saying there’s a chance. The New York Yankees live to see another day, pushing the 2024 World Series to a Game 5 when they host the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. When teams get down 3-0 in the World Series, they usually get swept let alone force Game 5. The Yankees are the first team to force a Game 5 after going down 0-3 in the World Series since Cincinnati in 1970 against the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles would win that series in seven games. No team has ever come back from three games down in the World Series. New York is taking it one game at a time and Game 4 was all about the Yankees to avoid the sweep. The Yankees had scored a combined seven runs in the first three games. New York scored six by the sixth inning on Tuesday and finished the game beating the Dodgers 11-4.
The game started off the way this entire series has been going, with another Freddie Freeman home run. It was his sixth World Series game in a row, dating back to 2021 with his time with the Braves, which is a new record. It felt like deja vu all over again for Yankees fans, but Anthony Volpe saved New York’s season with a grand slam that shifted the entire momentum of the game in the third inning. LA got within a run in the fifth with Freeman grabbing another RBI, but the Yankees just kept responding. New York wasn’t satisfied and took out all of its frustration of the series out in the eighth inning by putting up a five-spot, highlighted by a Gleyber Torres three-run bomb.

This is more of the offense we expected from the Yankees and the Dodgers bullpen strategy didn’t work in Game 4 despite being their strongest asset for much of October. New York has its best pitcher to keep its season alive for Game 5 in starter Gerrit Cole. He pitched phenomenally in Game 1, but was overshadowed by Freeman’s walkoff grand slam. Cole is 1-0 with a 2.82 ERA this postseason and only gave up a run in six innings and surrendering four hits. In all of the previous three games he’s started for New York this October, the Yankees have won.
He will be going up against a tough opponent in Jack Flaherty, who also pitched in Game 1. He had a good start, going 5.1 innings and giving up two runs. The edge on the mound is still in New York’s column tonight, but we should be in for another pitcher’s duel in late October. There’s not much else you could ask for as a baseball fan.
