The Durham Bulls visit the Norfolk Tides to open their International League season Friday in a rematch of last year’s IL championship series.
The defending Triple-A national champion Norfolk Tides open their 2024 International League season on Friday night at Harbor Park in Norfolk when the host the Durham Bulls in a rematch of last year’s IL championship series. The Tides are the top affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles while Durham is the Triple-A club for the Tampa Bay Rays. Norfolk was 90-59 last season, the best overall record in the IL, and won the first-half title while the Bulls were 88-62 and claimed the second-half crown. The Tides topped Durham 2-1 in the best-of-three championship series before beating the Pacific Coast League champion Oklahoma City Dodgers in the Triple-A National Championship in Las Vegas.

Norfolk features the No. 1 prospect in baseball in shortstop Jackson Holliday, the first overall pick by the Orioles in the 2022 draft and the son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday. Across four levels last season, the 20-year-old Holliday slashed .323/.442/.499 with 12 homers, 75 RBI and 24 steals, including a .267/.396/.400 mark with two homers and nine RBI in an 18-game stint with the Tides.
Durham shortstop Junior Caminero, also 20, got into seven games for parent Tampa Bay last season and is rated the No. 4 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline. Splitting last year between High-A and Double-A, Caminero hit .324/.384/.548 with 31 home runs and 94 RBI. He was 8-for-34 with a homer and seven RBI with the Rays and was on their postseason roster, appearing in two games.
Chayce McDermott, a 25-year-old right-hander ranked No. 9 in the Baltimore chain, gets the opening-day start for Norfolk. He had a 3.10 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 119 innings with 152 strikeouts in Double- and Triple-A in 2023. The Bulls have not announced a starter for Friday.
