Big Ten play continues on Monday night as Penn State travels to New Jersey to take on Rutgers in men’s soccer action.
On Monday night, Penn State will battle it out with Rutgers in a Big Ten soccer match, as the teams work to move up in the conference standings. The Scarlet Knights are currently 4-5-2 overall and 1-2-1 in Big Ten play, earning them four points for a spot in seventh place in the standings. The team earned its first conference win in impressive fashion on Friday night, as the Scarlet Knights downed No. 8 Wisconsin in a 3-1 victory on the road. The Badgers took a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the game, but Rutgers held on to hope for a comeback. In the 58th minute, Curt Calov scored the equalizer, converting a penalty kick and building momentum. The game winner went in during the 73rd minute of play when Francesco Di Ponzio netted his first goal of the season with an assist from Nestor Cabrera. Nico Rosamilia added a bit of insurance shortly before time expired.

The Nittany Lions are also 4-5-2 overall, but have a Big Ten record of 1-2-2 to sit right above Rutgers in the conference standings with five points. The team has played its last two games to draws with the most recent being a 2-2 result against visiting Big Ten newcomer UCLA. Trailing 2-0 in the 75th minute, Penn State had its work cut out for it, however, Caden Grabfelder brought the team within one, scoring his first goal of the season without assistance. Just four minutes later, Ben Madore found the back of the net with the equalizer. Penn State outshot UCLA 12-9 with six shots making it on frame as opposed to the four shots the Bruins put on net. Andrew Cooke made two crucial saves in goal to help his team put one point toward its conference total.
The last time these two programs met was during the first round of the Big Ten tournament last season. The Nittany Lions earned a 3-1 win to eliminate Rutgers on its way to a Big Ten Championship appearance in which they fell to Indiana in a 1-0 heartbreaker.
