Defending champion Minjee Lee finished with a one-under 71 after a birdie on the closing par-5 18th. Two of the world’s top three players, No. 1 Nelly Korda and No. 3 Lydia Ko, are in a large group of players tied for fourth at five-under-par. Also in that crowd are Savannah Grewal, Jasmine Suwannapura, Angel Yin, Peiyun Chien, Leona Maguire and Polly Mack.
Buhai hit 13 of 14 fairways on the way to the first-round lead. She also tied for the fewest putts on the day, 26, with Grewal and Mack. The tournament is in its third year and moved to TPC River’s Bend in nearby Maineville, Ohio, about 25 miles northwest of Cincinnati after it was held at Kenwood Country Club the first two years. Kenwood is in the midst of course improvements.
Buhai’s last victory came in the ShopRite LPGA Classic at New Jersey’s Seaview in June 2023. Korda leads the LPGA Tour with six wins this year.
