Club America and Monterrey will meet on Thursday night with the hopes of earning an advantage in the Liga MX apertura finals with a win in the first leg. Eight-seeded Club America pulled off a massive upset in the semifinal round after beating league-leading Cruz Azul. Club America took on Toluca in the quarterfinals, winning both legs with 2-0 victories to advance to the semifinals. The teams were square after the first leg ended in a scoreless draw, but America battled until the final minute, earning a 4-3 victory and a berth in the finals.

American winger Alejandro Zendejas scored the first goal 15 minutes into play with an assist from Richard Sánchez who extended the club’s league to 2-0 with an unassisted goal just after the half. Cruz Azul got on the board in the 68th minute, but Ramón Juárez re-extended the lead to two goals just four minutes later. Cruz Azul scored two more goals to even things up, but in stoppage time, Rodrigo Aguirre scored the game-winning goal to which Cruz Azul did not have an answer.
Monterrey was forced to play from behind in the second leg of the semifinals after losing to San Luis in a 2-1 defeat in the first leg. The first half of the second leg was scoreless, but Óliver Torres scored right out of the locker room to give Monterrey a quick start. Germán Berterame made it a 2-0 game five minutes later. San Luis scored its lone goal of the match in the 75th minute, but Monterrey rallied to score three unanswered goals and move onto the finals with a 5-1 victory.
Monterrey and Club America last met at the end of October and the game was tightly contested with America earning a 2-1 win. Brian Rodríguez and Álvaro Fidalgo scored for America while Monterrey’s lone goal was scored by Jordi Cortizo.
