The top seed for the knockout round at the IIHF Women’s World Championships up for grabs Monday night as the United States and Canada meet again
It’s not an exaggeration to say that the road to gold at the IIHF Women’s World Championships goes through the United States and Canada. The two national programs have won each of the 22 previous tournaments and have played for the gold medal 21 times. The lone exception came in 2019 when host Finland upset Canada in the semifinals. On Monday night at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York, the U.S. (3-0-0, 9 points) and Canada (3-0-0, 9 points) will decide the top overall seed for the knockout stage when they face off in the final Group A game for both.

The U.S. held off Finland on Saturday for a 5-3 victory. Kendall Coyne Schofield scored a pair of goals, each giving the Americans a two-goal lead, including the insurance tally just 15 seconds into the third period after the Finns closed to within 4-3 with 40 seconds remaining in the second.
Canada skated past a physical Czechia squad for a 5-0 win on Sunday. Kristin O’Neill had a hand in all three first-period goals for the Canadians, scoring twice and assisting on the third, while Ann-Renée Desbiens stopped all 13 shots she faced to record the shutout.
Coyne Schofield and Alex Carpenter have scored three goals each for the U.S. in the tournament, with Coyne Schofield leading the squad with six points. O’Neill took over the team scoring lead for Canada on Sunday and has two goals and four points. Emma Maltais lit the lamp twice thus far in the tourney as well.
