Kansas City Royals run it back after a breakthrough playoff berth in 2024, face the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday
The Kansas City Royals (4-1) broke through with a playoff berth last season, improving their win total by 30 after a 106-loss campaign in 2023 and advancing to the American League Division Series before losing to the New York Yankees. The Royals visit the Milwaukee Brewers (2-4), who won the last two National League Central titles before losing in the wild-card round each year, at American Family Fields in Phoenix on Thursday afternoon. Milwaukee got some tough news on Wednesday as it was reported that right-hander J.B. Bukauskas is expected to miss the entire season after lat surgery. He sat out most of last season with a lat problem as well.

The Royals made one trade over the winter, sending right-hander Brady Singer to the Cincinnati Reds for second baseman Jonathan India and outfielder Joey Wiemer. Kansas City retained starter Michael Wacha and swingman Michael Lorenzen and added a bullpen arm, signing right-hander Carlos Estévez, who finished last season with the Philadelphia Phillies after being traded from the Los Angeles Angels in late July.
Milwaukee traded closer Devin Williams to the New York Yankees, getting back lefty starter Nestor Cortes and infielder Caleb Durbin, and lost shortstop Willy Adames in free agency. Brice Turang, last season’s Platinum Glove winner while playing second base, may shift to shortstop to replace Adames and Durbin could be in the mix to move in at third base.
Kansas City took its first loss of the spring on Wednesday, dropping a 7-6 decision to the Colorado Rockies while the Brewers fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks by a 7-1 count. Right-hander Chandler Champlain is scheduled to start for the Royals on Thursday after he was roughed up for three runs in 1.1 innings in his spring debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. Right-hander Aaron Civale is set to make his first appearance of the spring for Milwaukee.
