Xander Schauffele sets the tone with a major-championship record-tying 62, takes a 3-shot lead into Friday at the PGA Championship

Xander Schauffele opened the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, on Thursday with a nine-under-par 62, matching the record-low score for a major championship in the process. The bogey-free round, which included five birdies in his first nine holes on the back nine, left Schauffele with a three-shot lead heading into Friday’s second round ahead of the trio of Tony Finau, Sahith Theegala and Mark Hubbard. Just four players carded 62s at a major, including Schauffele and Rickie Fowler at last year’s U.S. Open. The first to do it, Branden Grace, turned in the round during the 2017 Open Championship.

However, none of the three previous players to card 62s won the majors in which they scored them. Schauffele finished tied for 10th and Fowler tied for fifth at the 2023 U.S. Open while tied for sixth at the 2017 Open Championship.

Defending PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka stands tied for 12th after one round at four-under-par. Koepka won his third Wanamaker Trophy last year to go with wins in 2018 and 2019.

A group of seven players enters Friday tied for fifth at five-under-par, including Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tom Hoge, Tom Kim, Thomas Detry, Collin Morikawa and Maverick McNealy. Tiger Woods faded down the stretch, bogeying his final two holes to finish with a one-over-par 72. Woods made three birdies and four bogeys on the day.
