A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces try to even up their semifinal series against Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty on Wednesday.
The 2024 WNBA semifinals started off with the New York Liberty taking care of business against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces. Can they do it again on Tuesday? This is also a rematch of the 2023 WNBA Finals where Las Vegas won the first two games and then closed out New York in its house. Breanna Stewart came to play in Game 1 with her best playoff performance in a New York uniform. She finished with 34 points, five rebounds and four assists on 12-of-19 shooting from the field. That was Stewart’s sixth game of 30-plus points in the playoffs with the first five coming back when she was leading the Seattle Storm to two championships in her first six seasons. Now she looks to lead New York to the franchise’s first championship this season.

New York came to play with Stewart’s great performance, along with strong games from both Sabrina Ionescu (21 points) and Jonquel Jones (15 points and 12 rebounds). When New York has those three playing at a high level it reminds the WNBA why it was the best team in the league this regular season.
For Las Vegas, the Game 1 loss was only the fourth playoff loss overall in the last three seasons. It was also just its second Game 1 loss in eight playoff series during this dominant run where three-time MVP A’ja Wilson has led the franchise to back-to-back championships.
Wilson finished Game 1 with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists in the loss. The six rebounds tied a season-low for Wilson, as New York continues to show it has some answers for Wilson, who has been unstoppable all season. Kelsey Plum led the team with 24 points on 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range and Jackie Young added 17 points.
