Unbeaten Wichita State (5-0) returns to action on Thursday afternoon with a Thanksgiving Day matchup against Minnesota (5-1) to open the ESPN Events Invitational at State Farm Field House in Kissimmee, Florida. The Shockers last played in the NCAA tournament in 2021 and are in their second season under coach Paul Mills, who is 20-19. The Golden Gophers played in the 2019 edition of March Madness and were in last spring’s NIT. Coach Ben Johnson is in his fourth year with the program and is 46-55, with last season’s 19-15 mark the first winning season of his tenure.

Wichita State comes off an 88-63 blowout at Saint Louis at the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City on Friday. Justin Hill scored 17 points in the win while Corey Washington added 13. Hill posts 17.4 points per game and Washington averages 14.4 points and 5.6 rebounds.
Minnesota leaves home for the first time this season after beating Central Michigan 68-65 on Monday. Frank Mitchell’s layup with 5:27 left put the Gophers on top to stay while Dawson Garcia finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Lu’tye Patterson tossed in 19 points. Garcia averages 22.8 points and 7.8 boards and is the team’s lone double-figure scorer.
The Shockers lead the all-time series 3-2, though one of Minnesota’s wins was vacated. That was their most recent meeting, a 64-55 Gopher victory at the Big Island Invitational in Hilo, Hawaii, on Nov. 25, 1995.
