No. 1 Denver looks to rebound on Saturday after it was stunned at home by Arizona State in the weekend opener
Arizona State (5-7-1) handed No. 1 Denver (12-1-0) its first loss of the season on Friday night and on Saturday night the defending national champion Pioneers look to salvage a split when they take on the Sun Devils again at Magness Arena in Denver. Arizona State joined the National Collegiate Hockey Conference this season after eight seasons as an independent and improved to 2-3-1 and seven points in conference play. Denver captured its second national championship in three years last spring, giving the program 10 titles. The Sun Devils’ lone NCAA tournament trip came in 2019.

Artem Shlaine lit the lamp with his second goal of the game with just 46.1 seconds remaining in regulation on Friday night to lift Arizona State to a 3-2 victory, the program’s first ever at Denver. Shlaine gave the Sun Devils the lead just 35 seconds into the game and they never trailed, with Luke Pavicich making 28 saves.
The Pioneers never led as their 21-game winning streak ended with their first loss since March 8 at Colorado College. It was Denver’s first loss at home since Feb. 3 against Western Michigan, ending an 11-game run on home ice. Carter King had both goals in the loss, tying the game on the power play at 15:33 of the first period and knotting things again at 15:59 of the third.
Ryan Kirwan leads Arizona State with six goals while Noah Beck has two goals and a team-best 12 points. Pavicich is now 3-4-0 in seven starts with a .911 save percentage and 2.30 goals-against average. Sam Harris’ 10 goals tops the Pioneer roster, with King now at nine on the season. Jack Devine has a goal and 22 points to lead the club while Matt Davis is now 11-1-0 in 12 starts with a .933 save percentage and 1.59 GAA.
