    The United States (4-0-0), the defending gold medalist at the IIHF U-18 World Championships, enters the knockout stage of the tournament on Thursday. It takes on Switzerland (1-2-1), the fourth-place finisher from Group B for a spot in Saturday’s semifinals. The Americans poured in 33 goals in four games while winning Group A, surrendering just seven. The Swiss were outscored in their group stage by a 16-8 margin, winning just once. U.S. forward James Hagens leads the tournament with 16 points on seven goals and nine assists, while forward Teddy Stiga finished group play with five tallies and five helpers.

    The U.S. closed group play on Tuesday with a 9-4 drubbing of host Finland. The Americans opened a 3-0 lead before the Finns got on the scoreboard, with Stiga scoring each of the first three goals in a span of 5:56, bridging the first and second periods. Hagens also finished with a hat trick to go with three assists.

    Switzerland led 2-1 midway through the second period of its group stage finale on Tuesday before Sweden came back to take a 3-2 victory, scoring the game-winner on the first shot of overtime at 1:05 of the extra session. Gian Meier, Jordan Forget and Kimi Koerbler led Switzerland with two goals each while Meier has a team-high four points.

    Switzerland won its only medal at the world championships back in 2001, taking a silver. The United States owns tournament records with 11 gold medals and 19 overall.
