The 2024-25 Rivalry Series opens at Tech CU Arena in San Jose, California on Wednesday night when Canada takes on the United States in what has been reduced to a best-of-five series for this cycle. Canada has won the last two Rivalry Series in similar fashion — losing the first three games before roaring back for four straight wins. Canada brings back 21 of the 25 players from last year’s matchup, most notably the goalie trio of Ann-Renée Desbiens, Emerance Maschmeyer and Kristen Campbell. Veterans Marie-Philip Poulin, Sarah Nurse and Blayre Turnbull are back up front with 17-year-old Chloe Primarano (University of Minnesota) and Daryl Watts making their senior national team debuts.
The United States has 24 players who saw action in the 2023-24 series. U.S. mainstays Kendall Coyne Schofield, Hilary Knight and Megan Keller are back, while University of Wisconsin defender Laila Edwards, Taylor Heise, goalie Gynneth Phillips and Ohio State forward Joy Dunne make their Rivalry Series debuts. Aerin Frankel and Nicole Hensley are back in net as well.
The series continues Friday at Salt Lake City and Sunday in Boise, Idaho, before closing out in February with games at Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Summerside, Prince Edward Island. The opening three games come about three weeks before the second season of the Professional Women’s Hockey League drops the puck on Nov. 30 for an expanded 30-game schedule.
