Oakwood’s improbable run continues on Wednesday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington against unbeaten Jayton in the 1A Division I final.
Unbeaten Jayton (14-0), which was ranked third in the Texas Six-Man Division II rankings entering the playoffs, is in the state championship game for the first time since 2006 after rolling through the bracket. On Wednesday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the Jaybirds take on Oakwood (9-5), which has gone on a seven-game winning streak since falling to 2-5 with its fourth loss in five games back on Oct. 11. The Panthers are in the championship game for just the second time, with their only other appearance coming in 1991.

Oakwood held off Oglesby on Dec. 7 for a 54-51 semifinal victory on a cold, rainy day at Rocket Field in Robinson. The Panthers defense held when it needed to late in the game after the Tigers had cut a 21-point deficit to three. Gavin Wilbanks scored two touchdowns, his second giving Oakwood its three-score lead.
Jayton, which had beaten two-time defending state champ Benjamin in the quarterfinals, rolled to a 90-48 semifinal win over Klondike on Dec. 6 at Peoples Bank Stadium in Wolfforth. It was the first time Jayton played a full game, as their first 13 wins came via the 45-point stoppage rule. Cole Genrty had a fumble recovery and a kickoff return for touchdowns while Griff Real also had a scoop and score while Sean Stanaland returned an interception for a touchdown.
Jayton’s two state titles came in 1984 and 1985 and they lost their other two championship appearances in 1920 and 2006. Oakwood’s 1992 championship loss came in 11-man football. Six-man football is played on an 80-yard by 40-yard field with 10-minute quarters rather than 12.
