A 1st-time Michigan state champ will be crowned Saturday as No. 2 Frankenmuth takes on No. 1 Pontiac Notre Dame Prep
Frankenmuth (13-0) lost each of its first two trips to the Michigan Division 5 championship game in 2020 and 2022. On Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit, the Eagles take on a title-game newcomer in Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (11-1) with the winner claiming a first-ever state championship. The Fighting Irish entered the playoffs ranked No. 1 in Division 5, with Frankenmuth at No. 2. The Eagles reached the semifinals each of the last five seasons while Notre Dame Prep had never advanced beyond the regionals before this year’s run.

Frankenmuth took down defending state champion Grand Rapids Catholic Central 42-35 in Mount Pleasant on Nov. 23. Cash Tedford carried the ball 10 times for 147 yards and three touchdowns while Aiden Labissoniere rambled for 113 yards on six attempts and Lleyton Hoard picked up 107 yards on 10 runs. Kobbi Ke leads the ground attack with 888 yards while Hoard has 600 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The Fighting Irish scored a convincing 49-7 semifinal win over Flat Rock at Westland on Nov. 23. Quarterback Samuel Stowe accounted for four touchdowns, three in the air and one on the ground, and has 2,458 yards and 33 passing touchdowns this season. Billy Collins paces the ground game with 1,156 yards and eight TDs and also has 573 receiving yards and eight more scores. Joseph Decases is the top target for Stowe, with 1,126 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns while picking off seven passes as a defensive back.
Notre Dame Prep Coach Pat Fox graduated from Frankenmuth in 1982 and is 77-34 in his 11th season with the Fighting Irish. In 12 seasons, Phil Martin has led the Eagles to a 128-19 mark.
