Goodrich and Niles face-off at Ford Field on Friday, each looking for a first Michigan state championship.
Goodrich (12-1) returns to the Michigan Division 4 state championship game for the second time in three years and faces Niles (12-1), playing in its first-ever MHSAA final, on Friday. Neither team has won a state championship. Both teams come into the game with 12-game winning streaks after recovering from opening game losses. The Martians’ lone loss came against Division 5 finalist Frankenmuth, while the Vikings fell in Week 1 to Division 3 St. Joseph and advanced past the regional final for the first time in program history.

Paul Hess led Niles’ triple-option attack with 215 yards on 29 carries and a touchdown and Sam Rucker returned a kickoff 91 yards for a score, while running for 138 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries in the Vikings’ 62-30 semifinal win over Grand Rapids South Christian at Three Rivers on Saturday.
Chase Burnett scored the first three touchdowns of the game and the workhorse back finished with 123 yards on 32 carries and an interception on defense to lead Goodrich to a 28-14 victory over Harper Woods on Saturday in Rochester Hills. Colton Roe sealed the deal with a 27-yard pick six early in the fourth quarter.
Burnett has 1,463 yards and 25 touchdowns for the Martians, while Max Macklem has piled up 583 receiving yards and six scores. Hess and Rucker have each eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for Niles, with Hess totaling 1,202 yards and 14 touchdowns and Rucker checking in with 1,100 yards and 20 TDs. Peyton Gordon has added 834 yards and 15 scores.
