Championship-game newcomer Byron Center takes on 8-time state champion Orchard Lake St. Mary’s on Friday
Byron Center (12-1) is in uncharted territory as it heads to Ford Field in Detroit on Friday night for its first Michigan Division 2 championship appearance. Standing in the way is eight-time state champ Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (10-3), which last claimed a title in 2016. The Eaglets are playing in their 15th championship game but their first since winning the 2016 championship, the last of a run of three straight and seven finals appearances in eight years from 2009-16, with 2008 the lone miss.

The Bulldogs punched their ticket to Ford Field with a 41-14 semifinal rout of East Lansing at Greenville. Dual-threat quarterback Landon Tungate has 1,784 passing yards to go with 1,407 rushing yards, with 23 touchdown passes and 25 TDs on the ground. Isaac Lee has 11 touchdown catches to go with 789 receiving yards.
Orchard Lake St. Mary’s needed overtime to get past Birmingham Groves 28-27 on Saturday at West Bloomfield. Bryson Williams tied the game with a 10-yard touchdown run and freshman Beckett Kiefer, moved up to varsity for the playoffs, booted the decisive extra point. Darrin Jones leads the attack with 1,100 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns while Williams, a receiver, has 575 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Axel Newell has thrown for 1,271 yards and 11 scores.
It’s been a renaissance season for the Titans under coach Jermaine Gonzales, a star quarterback at the school in the late 1990s, as they return to the finals after a 3-6 record last season.
