Smithson Valley (13-2) is back at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, after a loss in last year’s 5A Division 1 championship game. This time around, the Rangers face Highland Park (14-1) out of Dallas, which is back in the title game for the first time since winning three straight championships from 2016-18. Both teams needed late heroics to win their semifinal matchups last week and both come into Saturday’s contest on long winning streaks. The Scots have won 11 games in a row while Smithson Valley, located in Spring Branch, has run off 10 consecutive victories.

Sutton Stock booted a 28-yard field goal with six seconds left to lift Highland Park to a 24-21 win over Denton Ryan on Dec. 13 at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, erasing an early 14-0 deficit. James Lancaster scored two touchdowns on the ground and quarterback Buck Randall shook off an early pick-six to finish with 256 yards and a touchdown.
On Saturday at McLane Stadium in Waco, the Rangers entered the fourth quarter with a 14-0 lead but needed a 97-yard drive in the late stages of the game to get past Angleton for a 21-14 victory. Quarterback Cade Spradling finished the drive with a 37-yard run, atoning for a lost fumble earlier in the quarter that led to the tying score.
The Scots have six state titles across three divisions across three divisions. They won the 2A crown in 1945, the 4A title in 1957 and the 4A Division 1 championship in 2005 before their three straight in 5A Division 1 from 2016-18. Smithson Valley is 0-4 in the title game. Besides last year’s loss to Aledo, it dropped the 5A Division 2 title game to Southlake Carroll in 2002 and 2004 and the 4A Division 1 final to Denton Ryan.
