Charles Leclerc of Ferrari picked up his second win of the season two weeks ago at Monza and on Saturday dominated qualifying to earn his fourth consecutive pole position in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the Baku City Circuit, set for early Sunday morning in the U.S. Leclerc posted the fastest time in all three qualifying sessions, claiming the top spot by 0.321 seconds over McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz and defending winner Sergio Pérez of Red Bull open on Row 2, with George Russell of Mercedes and three-time defending world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull comprising Row 3. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso start seventh and eighth while Williams’ duo of Franco Colapinto and Alexander Albon round out the top 10 starters on the grid.

In a season that opened with the look over another Verstappen romp to the title has taken a dramatic turn, with the Dutch superstar leading McLaren’s Lando Norris by 62 points. Leclerc is third, 86 points behind. Norris starts 16th after a stunning Q1 exit on Saturday.
Alpine’s Pierre Gasly was disqualified from qualifying for a fuel flow breach and was kicked to the back of the grid, where he is joined by Kick Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu, who exceeded his allowance of power unit components.
The constructor standings, which have been dominated by Red Bull the last three seasons, are exceedingly tight as the schedule winds down. Red Bull leads McLaren by just eight points entering Baku, with Ferrari just 39 points back.
