More than eight years have passed since Argentina last lost back-to-back games, but Peru will be doing all in its power to inflict that fate upon the top team in 2026 World Cup qualifying come Tuesday. The reigning world champion is currently setting the pace atop the CONMEBOL ladder, but a recent wobble in Paraguay has opened up a window of opportunity for another would-be conqueror. It seems a tall order considering Peru has won only once in 11 outings thus far in qualifying, but a return of just one win from its last four outings has put Argentina in a fresh light.

It’s been some time since Lionel Scaloni’s world-beaters last looked quite so human to their peers, though their home form remains fairly imperious after six straight wins (including friendlies).
Argentina suffered its third defeat of the qualifying campaign after falling to Paraguay over the weekend, though it wasn’t enough to move La Albiceleste from the top of the table:
Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez put Scaloni’s side ahead early on in Asuncion before goals from Antonio Sanabria and Omar Alderete pulled Paraguay clear in the automatic qualifying places.
Argentina is still three points above its nearest competition, with Uruguay and Colombia breathing down the team’s neck in search of their spots at the next World Cup.
The pressure is starting to ramp up for Peru to start accumulating points if it’s to have any chance of a qualifying spot, with five points between it and the play-off place in seventh as things stand.
