Defending champion Vincent Norrman and Northern Ireland’s own Rory McIlroy lead the field at famed Royal County Down on Thursday.

For just the second time since the creation of what is now the DP World Tour, the Amgen Irish Open returns to the revered layout of Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Northern Ireland. Defending champion Vincent Norrman of Sweden returns after his one-shot win at The K Club in Straffan, Ireland, a year ago. Rory McIlroy, leading the Race to Dubai Rankings as he hunts his third straight DP World Tour title and his sixth overall, opens play with Norrman and fellow Northern Ireland native Tom McKibbin. McIlroy has won this event once, back in 2016 at The K Club. Other notables in the field include Ireland’s Shane Lowry, the last player to win a DP World Tour event as an amateur when he won the Irish Open in 2009, and Denmark’s Søren Kjeldsen, who won in 2015 at Royal County Down.

Among the top of the Race to Dubai standings, No. 2 Thriston Lawrence and No. 5 Sebastian Söderberg are also competing this weekend. John Catlin, the American who won at Galgorm Castle in 2020, returns this year along with former champions McIlroy, Kjeldsen, Ross Fisher (2010), Lowry and Pádraig Harrington (2007).

Jon Rahm, the winner in 2017 and 2019, holds the tournament records with a 264 aggregate in both of his victories and a 19-under-par score in 2017.

The event was first played in 1927 and returned in 1974 after a 20-year absence. Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie share the record with three victories each.
