Ángel Hidalgo cought fire at the end of the opening round to claim a two-shot lead at the Open de España in Madrid. The second round begins on Friday.
Ángel Hidalgo made the turn Thursday at even-par before lighting up the front nine at Club de Camp Villa de Madrid in Spain to take a two-shot lead into Friday’s second round of the Open de España. Hidalgo’s last nine holes included four birdies and an eagle at the par-five fourth to close with a six-under-par 65. He came to Madrid 88th in the Race to Dubai standings and the 833 points with a win would vault him to the cut line at 70th for a spot in the DP World Tour Playoffs. Three-time tourney champion Jon Rahm is tied for fifth, three shots back, as he looks for a record fourth victory.

Julien Guerrier, Sam Bairstow and Sepp Straka share second place heading into Friday after first-round 67s, two shots off the pace. Rahm is joined in fifth place by Adri Arnaus and Ashun Wu, while amateur Luis Masaveu, Tommy Fleetwood, David Puid and Sam Jones are tied for eighth at two-under-par.
Defending champion Matthieu Pavon shot a one-under-par 70 and is in a group tied for 12th place. Pavon started on the back nine and finished the two with three birdies and two bogeys.
Players are competing for a share of 5,000 Race to Dubai points and the $3.25 million purse, with the winner getting a $552,500 payday. The tournament also has 1,500 points up for grabs in the race to represent Europe in the 2025 Ryder Cup.
