Tommy Thompson, an American treasure hunter who gained fame and notoriety after spearheading the successful search for the 1857 shipwreck of SS Central America, which was carrying tons of gold from the California Gold Rush when it sank off the Carolina coast.
In 1988, that gold was recovered by Thompson, who surprised the world by retrieving three tons of gold from a shipwreck in the Atlantic Ocean. But the gold changed his life in a way no one could have predicted.
