The biggest game in Calais’ history to date will pit the fifth-division side against Strasbourg in the last 64 of the Coupe de France on Saturday as it seeks a major upset against top-flight opposition. After gaining promotion to Championnat National 3 at the end of last season, the northern-most outfit in the French football system will host the protector of the eastern border in a clash of two extremes. Calais has already hit a new best by reaching the ninth round of the Coupe de France but won’t be content exiting at this stage as it seeks another scalp to add to its collection.

Following a merger between two Calais clubs in 2023, the new iteration of the team has gone from strength to strength and celebrated promotion to France’s fifth tier last season.

That’s a testament to the kind of talent residing within the Strasbourg squad, while Calais is yet to spend a single penny on transfers since its reboot last year.
The north-coast hopefuls have lost just one of their last five games and have gone more than two months undefeated at home, but Strasbourg will be confident of breaking that spell come Saturday.
