Non-conference play continues this week for Cal as the team host Saint Mary’s on Wednesday in college softball.
On Wednesday night, Saint Mary’s will hit the road to take on No. 20 Cal in a mid-week, non-conference matchup at Levine-Fricke Field on Wednesday. The Gaels come into Wednesday’s game on a three-game losing streak to bring their overall record to 19-13. The team’s most recent loss came against Nevada in an 11-3 defeat in five innings last week. The team finished the game with just two hits that came off the bats of Hannah Ferguson and Alex Cutonilli. In the circle, Odhi Vasquez was credited with the loss after giving up three earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. The Gaels will begin conference play next weekend, so they will be looking to build some momentum with a win to gear up for that.

The Golden Bears are currently in sixth place in the Pac-12 standings with an overall record of 26-10 and a record of 4-8 against Pac-12 opponents. Most recently, the team played Utah in a weekend series and the final game resulted in a close 3-2 loss. Elon Butler led the Golden Bears offensively, going 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored. Lagi Quiroga was responsible for the only earned run for Cal with a double in the fourth that scored Butler. Randi Roelling was credited with the loss in the circle, but not after a strong day of pitching. She threw a complete game and struck out four batters while only giving up four hits on the day.
These two teams have already met once this season and the game resulted in a tough 7-1 loss for the Gaels back in March to bring the all-time record between the two teams to 29-0 in Cal’s favor.
