Virginia Tech will play its penultimate non-conference game at home against Winthrop on Tuesday night.
Winthrop will hit the road on Tuesday night to take on No. 24 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg for a non-conference matchup as the regular season begins to wind down. The Eagles are currently 4-6-1 overall and 3-0 in Big South play for a spot in second place in the conference standings. On Saturday, Winthrop hosted UNC Asheville and earned a 2-0 victory in front of a home crowd. Behind a first half goal from Ethan Marks and a second half goal from Rodrigo Ferreira, the Eagles were able to stay undefeated in conference play and pick up their second shutout behind Andres Manzano Garcia who made three saves in net. The team will look to carry that momentum into Tuesday night’s game to pull off the upset.

The Hokies are currently 6-3-2 overall, but have had a tough time in ACC play and are just 1-3-1 for a spot in seventh place in the conference standings. On Friday, the team welcomed NC State to Thompson Field, playing to a scoreless draw. The game was pretty much dead even statistically with both squads finishing the game with a total of 10 shots, three of which ended up on frame for each team. Andy Sullins, Oliver Roche and Ethan Hackenberg each put up two shots to lead the Hokies’ offense while Cooper Wenzel kept the net clear with three saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season.
Virginia Tech and Winthrop have only met once before and it dates back to the 2021 season. The Hokies won handily in a 3-0 match in Blacksburg.
