The Bears took an early lead just two minutes into play when the ball ricocheted off of a Blue Devils’ defender for an own goal. In the 16th minute of play, Arik Duncan made it a 2-0 game scoring his fifth goal of the season off and assist by Kieran Bracken Serra. Duke put the pressure on for the remaining 74 minutes of play, finishing with 19 shots, five of which were on frame, but the Blue Devils could not beat Marco Brougher in net and the Bears advanced with the win.
With Pitt and Duke out of tournament play, Clemson is now the favorite to win the title, but in tournament play, another upset is not out of the realm of possibility. The Tigers played seventh-seeded Stanford in the quarterfinal round and won, but narrowly, in a 1-0 victory. The teams played a scoreless first half despite six shots from Clemson and five from Stanford.
In the second half, the Tigers continued to put on the pressure and were finally able to break through strong defense from the Cardinal in the 60th minute when Ransford Gyan found Alex Meinhard who scored his tenth goal of the season to lift Clemson over Stanford.
Cal and Clemson have only met three times in their histories and the all-time series currently stands at 1-1-1. The teams have not met for several years so this will be the first time any of the players on either squad have met. They will both need to rely on strong scouting reports as they head into Thursday’s game.
