Top-ranked Michigan State hits the ice for the first time in 2025 on Thursday, when they host Wisconsin for a Big Ten matchup.
Two of the top teams in the Big Ten square off in Lansing on Thursday night, in the first game for both on the 2025 calendar. No. 1 Michigan State (15-2-1, 6-1-1 Big Ten) will be at home at Ron Mason Rink at Munn Ice Arena, hosting Wisconsin (9-10-1, 5-7-0 Big Ten). Coming into Thursday, Michigan State and Wisconsin rank first and second in the Big Ten standings, respectively. That’s based on points though, and while Wisconsin has played 12 conference games so far – the most of any Big Ten team – Michigan State sits towards the top despite being tied for the fewest conference games so far with eight.

These teams met twice already this year. Those games were in early December, just prior to the New Year’s break. They split the two meetings in Madison – the Badgers picked up a 4-0 win to start the weekend before the Spartans won the next night 3-2 in overtime.
Michigan State returned early from the New Year’s break with a pair of games earlier this week as a part of the Great Lakes Invitational. The Spartans won both of their games in that showcase, beating Northern Michigan 2-0 and then getting by No. 4 Western Michigan 3-1.
Wisconsin also played in a showcase out of the break, the Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off. The Badgers won both of those games, shutting out Ferris State 8-0 before beating UConn 4-3 last weekend.
