College hockey is back and on Saturday night, Illinois will host Minot State for the second night in a row. The teams opened the 2024-2025 campaign last night in Ubrana-Champaign, Illinois and the game resulted in a 1-0 win for the Beavers. The Fighting Illini will look to move to .500 with a win at home but have some things to work out before that happens. In last night’s season opener, the Fighting Illini were able to put up 17 shots but were unable to beat Jake Anthony in net. The team played solid defense, as well, and did not concede until the third period. Nolan Woodring played a great game in net for Illinois, making 37 saves on 38 shots.

With the Beavers’ strong start to the season, the team is now 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey conference; a good way to start in their new conference. The offensive play from Minot State far surpassed Illinois’, finishing the game with an impressive 38 shots collectively. Christian Kadolph broke the tie with just seven minutes left to play, assisted by Ben Johnson. Jake Anthony’s 17 saves allowed him to earn his 13th shutout, putting him in third for all-time career shutouts behind head coach Wyatt Waselenchuk who finished his career with 15.
Minot State will look to hand Illinois its second straight loss and keep the win streak rolling right into its next two away games before heading home for the home opener on October 18th. Tune in Saturday night to see if Illinois can get one back in front of a home crowd.
