Minnesota (2-1), ranked sixth in this week’s USCHO.com poll, looks to complete a two-game sweep over Minnesota Duluth (1-3) at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth on Saturday night. The Golden Gophers have played in 41 NCAA tournaments, including last year, and are 138-72-17 in their seventh season under coach Bob Motzko, who coached at St. Cloud State for 14 seasons. The Bulldogs haven’t gone to the NCAA tournament since 2022 and are 457-391-101 in their 25th season under coach Scott Sandelin, who led them to NCAA championships in 2011 and 2018-19.

Minnesota opened with a four-goal flurry in the first period and never looked back en route to a 7-5 victory on Friday. Seven different players lit the lamp for the Gophers while Jimmy Clark finished with three assists. Minnesota outshot the Bulldogs 42-17 and won 50 of 77 faceoffs.
Aiden Dubinsky had two goals for Minnesota Duluth and Aaron Pionk set up four of the team’s five tallies. UMD got to within 5-3 on Dominic James’ power-play goal at 12:56 of the third, but two Minnesota goals in 27 seconds at 14:51 and 15:18 ended any comeback hopes.
Connor Kurth didn’t score Friday but leads the Gophers with three goals, with Kurth, Matthew Wood and Clark tied for the team lead with five points. Nathan Airey (2-0) has started two games in net, posting an .864 save percentage and 3.00 goals-against average. Jayson Shaugabay’s three goals lead UMD while James has two goals and five points. Adam Gajan (1-2) has an .894 save percentage and 4.38 GAA in three starts.
