In a major Conference USA matchup on Wednesday night, Jacksonville State visits Liberty with first place potentially on the line.
Wednesday night’s college football slate includes a key matchup in Conference USA. Liberty (5-1, 3-1) hosts Jacksonville State (4-3, 3-0) in a battle of two teams at the top of the standings. Coming into the week, Jacksonville State is one of two unbeaten teams left in the conference, along with Western Kentucky. That team also plays Wednesday night, at home against Kennesaw State. However the Flames are right behind in the standings, with just one conference loss so far this season.

That loss – which was also the first loss of any kind this season for Liberty and the Flames’ first-ever conference loss since joining C-USA – came last week on the road. The Flames dropped a 27-24 game against Kennesaw State, and now every game is a must-win for the team that ranked at the top of the C-USA preseason poll back in August.
Jacksonville State was picked to finish third in the conference, and so far the Gamecocks have taken care of business. They have wins over Kennesaw State, New Mexico State, and Middle Tennessee State. At the same time this game against Liberty represents the team starting what is a tougher back half of its schedule.
Liberty took last year’s meeting, winning 31-13 in Jacksonville. It was the Flames’ first-ever win in five tries against the Gamecocks, after four meetings when both schools were at the FCS level.
