Who is on the right side of the College Football Playoff as we head into Week 5 and who needs to get a big win?
The college football season is nearing the halfway point already and no team has really cemented itself as the top team in the country. There are still 22 undefeated teams in the country, but only a handful of them truly look like a contender for the college football playoff. They all have a ton of strengths but have looked shaky at times.
In the latest AP poll, five different teams received a first-place vote and those teams were separated by less than 200 points.
Things will start to change in the coming weeks as the top teams in the Pac-12 play as Oregon takes on Washington in two weeks and USC plays Notre Dame and Utah in two of its next three games. In the Big 12, Texas will play Oklahoma on Saturday, and in the Big Ten, Ohio State and Penn State play two weeks from Saturday.
It is about to get really interesting but before we kick things off for Week 6, we take a look at the current playoff picture in college football starting with our playoff picks and we also look at teams in the mix and with a chance.

Top Four
Georgia
The Bulldogs are the two-time defending champion and haven’t lost a regular season game since 2020 when they lost 44-28 to Florida. Since that loss, they have lost just once overall and reeled off 32 straight wins in the regular season. They have struggled a couple of times this year against South Carolina and Auburn, but until they lose, they get the benefit of the doubt.
Michigan
The Wolverines, admittedly, have not played anyone tough yet this year, but they have dominated everybody on their schedule. They have the top scoring defense in the country and the offense starters have yet to play in the fourth quarter. Last week, they went on the road for the first time and whipped Nebraska 45-7. The Wolverines have now won 22 straight regular season games.
Texas
The Longhorns have the best win of any of the contenders this year as they went to Alabama and beat the Crimson Tide 34-24. They have won every other game by at least 26 points and are coming off a convincing 40-14 win over No. 24 Kansas last weekend. They have been the most complete team outside of Michigan this season but will get tested on Saturday against No. 12 Oklahoma.
Washington
The Huskies have looked great all year long as Michael Penix Jr. continues to shine. The Huskies did let Arizona close to within seven on Saturday in a 31-24 win but they have been dominant outside of that game. They have a bye week before playing Oregon next week and that game will have huge playoff implications.

In the Mix
Florida State
The Seminoles have two big wins over LSU and Clemson, but they barely beat a bad Boston College team. They do have a fairly weak schedule the rest of the way and can not afford to take a loss.
Oregon
The Ducks have looked great and will jump into the top four if they can beat USC and Washington in the next two weeks. If they win both they will have a great shot at making the playoff.
USC
The offense is great, but the defense could hold it back. We will learn a lot about how good the Trojans are when they play the Ducks on Saturday.
Penn State
The Nittany Lions could easily swap with Michigan, but they need to prove they can beat Ohio State and the Wolverines first.
Ohio State
The Buckeyes have a huge win at Notre Dame already, but they haven’t looked nearly as impressive as we are used to seeing them. They have a tricky game against undefeated Maryland on Saturday.
