After its first postseason appearance since 2013, UNLV begins its season on Monday night in men’s college basketball when it hosts Alabama State at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The Runnin’ Rebels were 21-13 last season and advanced to the NIT quarterfinals and coach Kevin Kruger is 58-40 in his three seasons running the program. The Hornets were 13-19 a season ago and last advanced to the postseason when they played in the 2011 NCAA tournament. Coach Tony Madlock is 21-42 in two years at Alabama State after going 15-16 at South Carolina State in 2021-22 and serving as interim coach at Ole Miss in 2017-18, posting a 1-4 record.

UNLV returns six players from last season, including two starters in Dedan Thomas Jr., who earned Mountain West Conference Co-Freshman of the Year after averaging 13.6 points and 5.1 assists per game, and senior forward Rob Whaley Jr. Newcomers include transfers Jaden Henley (DePaul), Jailen Bedford (Oral Roberts), Jace Whiting (Boise State), Juilian Rishwain (Florida) and Jeremiah Cherry (JUCO), as well as freshmen Pape N’Diaye, Faris Mucharbach, Luke Naser and DeMarion Yap.
TJ Madlock was First Team All-SWAC last season after averaging 15.8 points per game and starting forward CJ Hines and center Ubong Okon are also back for the Hornets. Six of the eight newcomers are transfers, including Micah Simpson (JUCO), Jalen Keago (Pensacola State), Tyler Mack (Maryland-Eastern Shore), Shawn Fulcher (Buffalo), Mario Andrews (JUCO) and Jordon Marshall (JUCO). Freshmen Jerquarius Stanback and Kevin Alabi also arrive.
The meeting is the first between the Rebels and the Hornets.
