They got off to a hot start to the season as they won their first seven games of the year, but then the season completely turned on them. They were whipped by SMU and then lost two close games to Virginia and Clemson. They finished the season with blowout road losses to Louisville and Boston College. Thursday they will look to finally get back in the win column and get a big bowl win. The Panthers have played two different quarterbacks this season as Eli Holstein has thrown for 2,225 yards and 17 touchdowns, while Nate Yarnell has gone for 1,056 yards and 10 touchdowns. Konata Mumpfield has been the top target as he has a team-best 52 receptions and five touchdowns.

The Rockets come into the bowl game on a two-game losing streak and 7-5 on the season. They had won seven of their first 10 games of the season, but lost to Ohio at home and then finished their regular season with an overtime loss at Akron. It was at tough end to the season for the Rockets and dropped them 4-4 in the MAC and in a sixth place tie in the standings.
Tucker Gleason has led the team this season as he has thrown for 2,457 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Jerjuan Newton and Junior Vandeross III has been his top targets this season as they have 64 and 73 receptions respectively. They have combined for 15 touchdowns on the season.
