The History of Club América

Founding and Early Years
Club América, one of the most storied football clubs in Mexico, was founded on October 12, 1916, by a group of college students from Colegio Mascarones and Colegio Marista de la Perpetua. The team was named “América” in honor of Columbus Day, and its colors were chosen to be navy blue and yellow. The club quickly established itself in the Mexican Football League, winning its first Primera Fuerza title in the 1924-25 season and securing three more consecutive titles in the following years.

Rise to Prominence
The 1950s and 1960s were transformative decades for Club América. In 1959, Emilio Azcárraga Milmo, owner of Telesistema Mexicano, acquired the club, marking the beginning of a new era. This era also saw the club’s first foray into the Copa Libertadores, where they reached the semifinals.
