Germany and Finland look for a win after losing their World Junior openers on Thursday in Ottawa
Finland (0-1-0, 0 points) goes into its second game in Group A at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship still looking for its first goal as it was blanked in its opener on Thursday. On Friday at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, the Finns take on Germany (0-1-0, 0 points), which found itself on the wrong end of a shooting gallery in a lopsided loss in its Thursday opener. Finland placed fourth at last year’s World Juniors in Sweden, losing to Czechia in the bronze-medal game, while the Germans needed to beat Norway in the relegation playoff last year to avoid dropping out of the sport’s top group.

Finland fell behind late in the first period and never got back into the game in a 4-0 loss to Canada on Thursday night. The Finns got 31 shots on net but never put one past Canadian goalie Carter George. Petteri Rimpinen made 37 saves in the loss.
The good news for Germany on Thursday was scoring four goals against the defending champion United States. The bad news was the Germans were outshot 56-22 in their 10-4 loss to the U.S. It was already 3-0 before Germany got second-period goales from Julius Sumpf and David Lewandowski but when Lenny Boos scored 5:37 into the third period it cut the deficit to 7-3. Timo Ruckdaschel had the final goal for the Germans and Nico Pertuch stopped 46 shots.
Group A is this tournament’s group of death with the top-seeded U.S. and 20-time champion Canada on the same side of the draw after its fifth-place finish last year. Latvia placed eighth in Sweden a year ago to round out the group.
