The United States looks to get a step closer to a spot in the knockout stage with a win over Kazakhstan on Sunday
The United States (3-1-1, 10 points) could clinch a spot in the knockout stage of the IIHF World Championships on Sunday with a victory over Kazakhstan (1-4-0, 3 points) and some help later in the day. The U.S. holds fourth place, the final spot in Group B for the knockout stage, and leads Latvia by three points with two games remaining. With a regulation win followed by the Latvians not gaining a regulation victory against Slovakia later Sunday, the Americans claim a spot in the next round. The Kazakhs, already eliminated from medal contention, hold seventh place in the group, two points ahead of Poland in the race to avoid relegation to Division IA.

Cole Caufield of the Montreal Canadiens scored two third-period goals, including one into an empty net, as the United States beat Poland 4-1 on Friday. After a scoreless first period, Michael Kesselring of Utah — formerly the Arizona Coyotes — and Brady Tkachuk of the Ottawa Senators made it a 2-0 game in the second. Trey Augustine of Michigan State made 20 saves to pick up the win in net.
Kazakhstan, meanwhile, look an 8-2 thumping from Germany on Friday, surrendering a pair of goals in the first 2:24 of the game. Captain Roman Starchenko of domestic club Barys Astana and Artyon Korolyov of Nomad Astana netted the goals for the Kazakhs. Starchenko leads the team with two goals at the worlds and shares the team-high of three points with Samat Daniyar and Yevgeniy Rymarev, both from Barys Astana.
The United States last medaled at the worlds with a bronze in 2021. Tkachuk, with three goals, and Shane Pinto of the Senators, with two, share the team lead of seven points for the U.S. Tkachuk and Matt Boldy of the Minnesota Wild top the club with three goals each.
