Spain topped its group in the first phase of the competition, thanks to finishing with nine points out of its three matches. The Spanish U-20 women’s national team finished all three matches without conceding a goal, while scoring five in that span. The team opened the campaign with a 1-0 finish over the United States thanks to an early eighth-minute strike from Olaya Enrique Rodríguez. Spain held the ball for most of the match, leaving the U.S. without a single shot on target.

Spain then took a 2-0 victory over Paraguay on matchday two. This time, Jone Amezaga led the team with a first-half brace. The Spanish national team dominated again, holding 85 percent of the ball possession throughout the match.
Finally, Spain beat Morocco 2-0 to seal the top spot in the group, and advance to the knockout phase of the tournament. Spain then beat Canada 2-1 in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. Amezaga and Silvia Lloris found the back of the net to turn the match around after the Spanish team went down 1-0 in the second half.
Meanwhile, Japan took a 2-1 victory of its own in the round of 16, eliminating Nigeria in the process. Miyu Matsunaga and Maya Hijikata scored the goals in the encounter for the Japanese team.
