USC welcomes Chattanooga to town on Monday night in the season opener of men’s college basketball for both teams.

The USC Trojans begin the Eric Musselman era on Monday night when they host the Chattanooga Mocs. The Trojans saw head coach Andy Enfield leave for SMU, but they were able to lure away Musselman from Arkansas as they begin their first season in the Big Ten. Musselman led the Razorbacks to 20 or more wins in his first four seasons there, but they went just 16-17 last season. The Trojans are hoping he can do what he did for the Razorbacks right away as they try and look to bounce back from a tough 15-18 season last season. The Trojans played better at the end of the season, as they went 7-3 in their last 10 games, but a six-game losing streak in the middle of the season doomed them. The Trojans will play their first six games at home and don’t play a true road game until they travel to Washington on Dec. 7.

They have been beaten up and look to get on track despite all of that against a very familiar opponent in the Portland Trail Blazers (2-5). Brandon Ingram added 21 points, McCollum 20 points and Zion Williamson stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in less than 30 minutes.

New Orleans edged out Portland 105-103 in that first game in large part due to Jerami Grant’s career shooting night. The 11-year veteran went off from three, going 8-of-17, surpassing his previous career-high of seven made three-pointers in 2022.

When the scene shifted home for New Orleans it ran away with a 125-103 victory. New Orleans won every quarter, as five different players scored in double figures, led by McCollum’s 27 points. Hawkins again was impressive off the bench with 17 points, which will be key today with Murray, McCollum, Jones and Murphy III all out of the lineup.

This season the team is 11th in points per game, 15th in pace and 16th in offensive rating. Tyrese Haliburton’s slow start to the season is the main catalyst to this slower start.

Gonzaga Bulldogs Men’s Basketball 2024-25 Team Preview

The 2024-25 Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball team enters the season with renewed determination, ranked #12 in preseason polls and aiming to reclaim their position as a national powerhouse under long-time head coach Mark Few.

    Key Returners

The Bulldogs are led by the return of several core players:

    • Ryan Nembhard: The senior point guard is back after a solid junior season where he averaged 12.1 points and 6.3 assists per game. Nembhard’s leadership and playmaking abilities are crucial to Gonzaga’s success.
    • Nolan Hickman: The senior guard showed significant improvement last season and is expected to take on an even larger scoring role this year. His three-point shooting and defensive intensity are key components of the Bulldogs’ game plan.
    • Graham Ike: The senior forward returns as a dominant interior presence, having averaged 16.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game last season. His efficiency in the post and rebounding prowess anchor Gonzaga’s frontcourt.

    Notable Newcomers

Gonzaga has added several high-impact transfers and freshmen to bolster their roster:

    • Steele Venters: The redshirt junior guard transfers from Eastern Washington, where he was a prolific scorer, averaging 15.3 points per game in 2022-23 before missing last season due to injury. His shooting ability should provide an immediate boost to the Bulldogs’ perimeter offense.
    • Dusty Stromer: The sophomore guard is poised for a breakout season after showing flashes of potential as a freshman. His development could be key to Gonzaga’s backcourt depth.
    • Kaden Perry: The redshirt sophomore forward is finally healthy and ready to contribute after battling injuries. His athleticism and shot-blocking ability add a new dimension to the frontcourt.

    Projected Starting Lineup

    1. Ryan Nembhard (G, Sr.)
    2. Nolan Hickman (G, Sr.)
    3. Steele Venters (G, R-Jr.)
    4. Ben Gregg (F, Sr.)
    5. Graham Ike (F, Sr.)

    Outlook

After a somewhat disappointing 2023-24 season by Gonzaga’s lofty standards, the Bulldogs are looking to reestablish themselves as a national contender. The team’s blend of experienced returners and impact newcomers gives them the potential to compete at the highest level once again.

Coach Few faces the challenge of integrating new pieces and finding the right rotations, but the talent on this roster gives Gonzaga a legitimate shot at making a deep NCAA Tournament run. The combination of Nembhard’s leadership, Ike’s interior dominance, and improved perimeter shooting makes the Bulldogs one of the most intriguing teams in college basketball heading into the 2024-25 season.

Key factors for Gonzaga’s success this season include:

    1. Ryan Nembhard’s ability to orchestrate the offense efficiently
    2. Graham Ike’s continued dominance in the post
    3. The impact of transfer Steele Venters in providing additional perimeter scoring
    4. Improved team defense, particularly on the perimeter

Gonzaga’s offensive efficiency has long been their hallmark, but improving their defensive consistency will be crucial for success against top competition. The Bulldogs’ non-conference schedule remains challenging, featuring matchups against several ranked opponents, which should prepare them well for conference play and beyond.

If the Bulldogs can successfully blend their returning core with the new additions and maintain their offensive prowess while improving defensively, they have all the pieces necessary to make another run at the Final Four. The 2024-25 season presents an opportunity for Gonzaga to remind the college basketball world of their elite status and potentially capture that elusive national championship.

Iowa State Cyclones Men’s Basketball 2024-25 Team Preview

The 2024-25 Iowa State Cyclones men’s basketball team enters the season with high expectations, ranked #8 in preseason polls and poised for another strong run in the highly competitive Big 12 Conference under head coach T.J. Otzelberger.

    Key Returners

The Cyclones are led by the return of several core players:

    • Tamin Lipsey: The junior point guard is back after a breakout sophomore season where he earned second-team All-Big 12 honors. Lipsey’s elite defense, improved scoring, and leadership are crucial to Iowa State’s success.
    • Tre King: The senior forward returns for his final season, bringing versatility and experience to the frontcourt. His ability to stretch the floor and defend multiple positions is key to the Cyclones’ system.
    • Hason Ward: The senior center provides a strong defensive presence in the paint, with his shot-blocking and rebounding abilities anchoring Iowa State’s formidable defense.

    Notable Newcomers

Iowa State has bolstered its roster with several high-impact transfers and freshmen:

    • Keshon Gilbert: The junior guard transfers from UNLV, where he averaged 15.8 points and 4.3 assists per game last season. His scoring ability and playmaking should provide an immediate boost to the Cyclones’ offense.
    • Kayden Fish: The freshman forward comes in as a highly-touted recruit, ranked in the top 100 nationally. His size and skill set could earn him significant playing time in his first year.
    • Omaha Biliew: Another top-100 freshman, Biliew brings athleticism and defensive versatility to the frontcourt, fitting perfectly into Otzelberger’s system.

    Projected Starting Lineup

    1. Tamin Lipsey (G, Jr.)
    2. Keshon Gilbert (G, Jr.)
    3. Curtis Jones (G, Sr.)
    4. Tre King (F, Sr.)
    5. Hason Ward (C, Sr.)

    Outlook

After reaching the Sweet Sixteen in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, Iowa State looks to build on that success in the 2024-25 season. The Cyclones’ trademark defensive intensity, combined with improved offensive firepower, makes them a legitimate contender in the Big 12 and on the national stage.

Coach Otzelberger’s ability to integrate new players into his system while maintaining the team’s defensive identity will be crucial. The Cyclones face a challenging schedule in the ultra-competitive Big 12, but their depth and versatility should allow them to compete for the conference title.

Key factors for Iowa State’s success this season include:

    1. Tamin Lipsey’s continued development as a scorer to complement his elite defense and playmaking
    2. The impact of transfer Keshon Gilbert in providing additional perimeter scoring and ball-handling
    3. How quickly freshmen Kayden Fish and Omaha Biliew can adapt to the college game and contribute
    4. Maintaining their defensive intensity while improving offensive efficiency

Iowa State’s defensive prowess, experienced leadership, and improved offensive options make them one of the most intriguing teams in college basketball. The Cyclones’ ability to lock down opponents and create turnovers has been their calling card, but the addition of Gilbert and the continued development of returning players could lead to a more balanced attack.

If the newcomers can quickly adapt to Otzelberger’s system and the returning players continue to improve, Iowa State has a legitimate shot at competing for the Big 12 title and making a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. The combination of defensive tenacity and offensive potential positions the Cyclones as a team to watch in the 2024-25 season, with aspirations of reaching their first Final Four since 1944.

    Key Returners

The Cougars are led by the return of several core players:

    • Jamal Shead: The senior point guard is back after an outstanding 2023-24 season where he earned first-team All-Big 12 and All-American honorable mention honors. Shead’s leadership, playmaking ability, and defensive prowess are crucial to Houston’s success.

    • Kordelius Jefferson: The five-star freshman guard is the highest-rated recruit in program history. His combination of size, skill, and athleticism could earn him significant playing time immediately.

    Projected Starting Lineup

    2. Emanuel Sharp (G, Jr.)
    3. Jace Carter (G, Jr.)

    5. Ja’Vier Francis (F, Jr.)

    Outlook

After a successful inaugural season in the Big 12 that saw them claim a share of the regular-season title, Houston looks to build on that momentum in 2024-25. The Cougars’ trademark defensive intensity and rebounding prowess, combined with improved offensive firepower, make them a legitimate national title contender.

Coach Sampson’s ability to integrate new players into his system while maintaining the team’s identity will be crucial. The Cougars face a challenging schedule in the ultra-competitive Big 12, but their depth and versatility should allow them to compete for the conference title once again.

Key factors for Houston’s success this season include:

    1. Jamal Shead’s continued development as a scorer to complement his elite playmaking and defense
    2. Emanuel Sharp’s emergence as a consistent second scoring option
    3. The impact of transfer Jace Carter in providing additional perimeter scoring
    4. How quickly freshman Kordelius Jefferson can adapt to the college game and contribute

If the newcomers can quickly adapt to Sampson’s system and the returning players continue to improve, the Cougars have a legitimate shot at reaching their first Final Four since 2021 and contending for a national championship.

The combination of experienced leadership, defensive tenacity, and offensive potential positions Houston as a team to watch in the 2024-25 season, with aspirations of cutting down the nets in April.

UConn Huskies Men’s Basketball 2024-25 Team Preview

The 2024-25 UConn Huskies men’s basketball team enters the season with high expectations, aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive national championship under head coach Dan Hurley.

    Key Returners

The Huskies are led by the return of several important players:

    • Alex Karaban: The redshirt junior forward is UConn’s lone returning starter and a potential preseason All-American. Karaban’s versatility and three-point shooting (38.9% career) will be crucial for the Huskies’ success.
    • Hassan Diarra: The graduate guard is poised for a larger role after winning Big East Sixth Man of the Year last season. Diarra’s defensive prowess and improved offensive efficiency make him a key veteran presence.
    • Samson Johnson: The senior center is expected to step into a starting role, bringing elite rim protection and efficient scoring (72.5% field goal percentage last season).

    Notable Newcomers

UConn has bolstered its roster with high-impact transfers and freshmen:

    • Aidan Mahaney: The junior guard transfers from Saint Mary’s, where he averaged 13.9 points per game last season. His scoring ability could earn him a starting role or significant minutes off the bench.
    • Tarris Reed: The junior center comes from Michigan, bringing size and experience to the frontcourt after averaging 9.0 points and 7.2 rebounds last season.
    • Liam McNeeley: The five-star freshman forward is the crown jewel of UConn’s recruiting class, ranked No. 10 nationally by 247Sports. His shooting and offensive skills should contribute immediately.

    Projected Starting Lineup

    1. Hassan Diarra (G, Gr.)
    2. Solomon Ball (G, So.)
    3. Jaylin Stewart (F, So.)
    4. Alex Karaban (F, R-Jr.)
    5. Samson Johnson (C, Sr.)

    Outlook

Despite losing key players like Tristen Newton, Donovan Clingan, and Cam Spencer to the NBA, UConn has reloaded with a mix of experienced returners, impact transfers, and talented freshmen. The Huskies’ depth and versatility should allow them to maintain their status as a national contender.

Coach Hurley faces the challenge of integrating new pieces and finding the right rotations, but the talent on this roster gives UConn a legitimate shot at making history with a third straight national title. The combination of Karaban’s leadership, improved frontcourt depth, and an influx of scoring talent makes the Huskies one of the most intriguing teams in college basketball heading into the 2024-25 season.

Key questions for the season include:

    1. How will Hassan Diarra handle the starting point guard role?
    2. Can Solomon Ball and Jaylin Stewart take significant steps forward in their sophomore seasons?
    3. Will Aidan Mahaney’s scoring translate to the Big East level?
    4. How quickly can freshman Liam McNeeley adapt to the college game?

If UConn can answer these questions positively and develop chemistry throughout the season, they have all the pieces necessary to cut down the nets once again in April.

How to Watch Utah Jazz at Chicago Bulls: Stream NBA Live, TV Channel

Lauri Markkanen leads the Utah Jazz against the team that drafted him in the Chicago Bulls.

After four seasons in the windy city the Chicago Bulls (3-3) traded away Lauri Markkanen. Since then the sharp-shooting big man has had an extra pep in his step against the team that drafted and then gave up on Markkanen. Now Markkanen leads the Utah Jazz (0-6) who are in the middle of a rebuild. They are also the only remaining winless team in the 2024-2025 season. Utah has clearly shifted both eyes to the future while Chicago is focused on remaining good enough led by a group of young players and others entering their primes in Zach LaVine, Coby White and Josh Giddey. That trio has shown flashes through six games keeping Chicago in the mix through the first two weeks of the season.

In his six games against Chicago between his time in Utah and with the Cleveland Cavaliers Markkanen has far and away his best individual numbers. He has averaged 24.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game on 58-44-84 shooting splits. Chicago has gotten the better of the match-up going 5-1 in games against its former lottery pick.

This season Markkanen is off to a slower start averaging just 18.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Those are both career-lows for Markkanen since joining Utah three seasons ago. Markkanen (back) is day-to-day after missing the team’s last game against the Denver Nuggets.

For Chicago the inconsistency that has plagued the team for years is still there despite the fresh coat of paint on the roster. The trio of LaVine, White and Giddey are filling up the statsheet nightly averaging a combined 58.9 points, 17.8 rebounds and 13.2 assists per game.

Alabama Crimson Tide Men’s Basketball 2024-25 Team Preview

The 2024-25 Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team enters the season with high expectations, ranked #2 in preseason polls and poised for another deep NCAA tournament run under head coach Nate Oats.

    Key Returners

The Crimson Tide are led by the return of several key players:

    • Mark Sears: The senior guard is back after an outstanding 2023-24 season where he earned first-team All-SEC and second-team All-American honors. Sears averaged 24.2 points on 53.2% shooting during Alabama’s NCAA Tournament run to the Final Four.
    • Grant Nelson: The senior forward showed flashes of his potential last season, particularly in the NCAA Tournament. His versatility and improved consistency could be crucial for Alabama’s success.
    • Latrell Wrightsell Jr.: The graduate transfer guard proved to be a key piece last season, providing steady veteran leadership and excellent shooting.

    Notable Newcomers

Alabama bolstered its roster with several high-impact transfers:

    • Clifford Omoruyi: The graduate transfer center from Rutgers averaged 10.4 PPG and 8.3 RPG last season while shooting 51.2% from the floor. His rim protection (2.9 blocks per game) addresses a key need for the Crimson Tide.
    • Chris Youngblood: The graduate transfer guard from South Florida averaged 15.3 PPG while shooting over 41% from three-point range last season.
    • Houston Mallette: Another sharpshooter, Mallette transfers from Pepperdine where he averaged 14.7 PPG and shot over 41% from deep.
    • Aden Holloway: The sophomore guard transfers from rival Auburn, adding depth to the backcourt.

    Freshman Class

Alabama’s recruiting class is ranked #2 nationally, headlined by:

    • Derrion Reid: The 5-star forward and McDonald’s All-American brings versatility and athleticism to the frontcourt.
    • Aiden Sherrell: Another 5-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American, Sherrell provides much-needed rim protection at 6’11”.
    • Naas Cunningham: The 4-star recruit offers an intriguing blend of size and skill at the guard position.
    • Labaron Philon: A late addition to the class, Philon is a talented scoring guard from Mobile, Alabama.

    Outlook

With a blend of experienced returners, impact transfers, and elite freshmen, Alabama has all the pieces to contend for a national championship. The Crimson Tide’s depth and talent should allow them to weather a challenging schedule that includes 16 games against ranked opponents.

If Coach Oats can successfully integrate the newcomers and build on last season’s Final Four run, Alabama has a legitimate shot at cutting down the nets in April. The combination of Sears’ leadership, improved frontcourt depth, and an influx of shooting talent makes the Crimson Tide one of the most intriguing teams in college basketball heading into the 2024-25 season.

Jalen Brunson leads the New York Knicks on the road against Jalen Green and the Houston Rockets.

The New York Knicks (3-2) are starting to build some chemistry after a rough outing in the season-opener. Since then they are allowing just 103.3 points per game, which would be third in the league. They look to keep rolling against the Houston Rockets (3-3) who fell just short of one of the most exciting comebacks in recent memory after falling behind 28 points at the half, then losing in overtime in their last outing. Houston will try to bounce back at home against a tough New York team that has rallied behind the play of Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns in its last two wins.

Over the last two games New York has made an effort to get Towns involved in the offense. He shot just 18 times (3-6 from three) in New York’s first three games. Since then he has exploded averaging 32.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game on 58-63-89 shooting splits.

With Towns rolling the New York offense looks formidable again. It has also opened up the floor for Brunson who has put up 29.0 points and 7.0 assists per game on 50-60-75 shooting splits over the last two games. Those two create one of the most effective duos in the league when on the same page.

For Houston the offense is built around balance with seven players averaging at least 9.7 points per game. They use balance and an unpredictable attack to surprise opponents with Alperen Sengun, Jalen Green, Fred VanVleet or the bench all capable of taking over games.

Kansas Jayhawks Men’s Basketball 2024-25 Team Preview

The 2024-25 Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team enters the season with high expectations, ranked #1 in preseason polls and poised for another deep NCAA tournament run under legendary head coach Bill Self.

    Key Returners

The Jayhawks are led by the return of two All-American caliber players:

    • Hunter Dickinson: The 7’2″ center is back for his fifth and final collegiate season after averaging a double-double (17.9 points, 10.9 rebounds) in 2023-24. Dickinson’s size, skill, and experience make him one of the most dominant big men in college basketball.
    • Dajuan Harris Jr.: The senior point guard returns as the floor general, coming off a season where he averaged 8.5 points and 6.5 assists per game. Harris’s leadership and playmaking ability are crucial to Kansas’s success.

Other key returners include senior forward KJ Adams Jr. (12.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG) and sophomore guard Johnny Furphy, who showed flashes of potential as a freshman.

    Notable Newcomers

Kansas bolstered its roster with several high-impact transfers:

    • AJ Storr: The junior guard transfers from Wisconsin, where he averaged 16.8 points per game last season. His scoring punch should provide an immediate boost to the Jayhawks’ offense.
    • Zeke Mayo: The senior guard comes over from South Dakota State after putting up 18.8 points per game. Mayo adds another scoring threat and perimeter shooting to the lineup.
    • Rylan Griffen: The junior guard transfer from Alabama brings additional depth and experience to the backcourt.

The Jayhawks also welcome two highly-touted freshmen in center Flory Bidunga and guard Rakease Passmore, both of whom could contribute immediately.

    Schedule Highlights

Kansas faces a challenging non-conference slate, including:

    • A home game against North Carolina (Nov. 8)
    • Michigan State in the Champions Classic (Nov. 12)
    • Duke in the Vegas Showdown (Nov. 26)
    • Road games at Creighton (Dec. 4) and Missouri (Dec. 8)

The Big 12 schedule promises to be grueling as always, with the addition of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah to the conference.

    Outlook

With a blend of experienced returners, impact transfers, and talented freshmen, Kansas has all the pieces to contend for a national championship. Dickinson’s presence inside, combined with a deep and talented backcourt, gives the Jayhawks one of the most well-rounded rosters in the country.

Coach Self will have the challenge of integrating the newcomers and finding the right rotations, but the talent and depth on this team should allow Kansas to weather the rigors of a tough schedule and position themselves as a top seed come March. If the Jayhawks can gel as a unit and stay healthy, they have a legitimate shot at cutting down the nets in San Antonio at the 2025 Final Four.

Kobe Knox and South Florida will take the court against Alijah Martin and Florida on Monday night.

South Florida will head on the road on the opening night of men’s college basketball, taking on the No. 21 ranked team in the nation, Florida, at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, a part of the Jacksonville Sports Foundation Invitational. This team has done something that most college basketball teams have not over the offseason — they have retained their leading scorer from the previous year. Walter Clayton, Jr., now a senior, averaged 17.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists last year for Florida.

Among Clayton, some of the other projected starters for this team include returning sharpshooter Will Richard, who hit 70 threes last season, and Chattanooga transfer Sam Alexis, who averaged 9.1 rebounds with 70 blocks last season. They also brought in Washington State transfer Reuben Chinyelu, a rebounding and shot-blocking specialist. Another big name that was added to this roster was Alijah Martin from Florida Atlantic averaging 13.1 points and 5.9 rebounds last season.

The Bulls were an exciting team to watch in college basketball last season. Unfortunately, they lost their most exciting and leading scorer, Chris Youngblood, who is now a part of the No. 2 ranked Alabama. They also lost the only other two players to average over 10 points per game for the team last season — Selton Miguel to Maryland and Kasean Pryor to Louisville.

South Florida did retain Kobe Knox, who is expected to have a bigger role on the team this season. He averaged 8.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game last season. You will not want to miss the opening night of college basketball for Florida and South Florida.

Michigan hosts Cleveland State on Monday night in the season opener for both teams

The Michigan Wolverines welcome the Cleveland State Vikings to town on Monday night as they look to open the Dusty May era with a win. May came to Michigan after a successful run at FAU in which he lead the Owls to a historic trip to the Final Four. May has completely flipped the roster from a Michigan team that won just eight games last year. The Wolverines won their first three games of the season and were 6-5 after 11, but they would win just two of their last 21 games. It was a horrible season for the Wolverines and it cost Juwan Howard his job and led to the hiring of May. The Wolverines are now hoping they can make a quick turnaround and get back to the NCAA tournament this season. They have a tough early schedule as they will take on Wake Forest and TCU in the two games after Monday and they will also head to Ft. Myers for a tournament over Thanksgiving week.

Sabonis has two elite scorers on the perimeter pacing the offense in DeMar DeRozan and De’Aaron Fox. This season those three are averaging 21-plus points per game. Sacramento is the only team in the league this season with three scorers of that volume leading an offense through the first two weeks.

For Miami, the offense has struggled scoring just 108.4 points per game, 24th in the league. Tyler Herro (20.8 points per game), Terry Rozier (17.2 points per game), Jimmy Butler (17.0 points per game) and Adebayo (15.2 points per game) are carrying the load for a team that plays one the slowest, plotting styles in the NBA.

The Super Bowl LV rematch is on. This time the game will be in Kansas City instead of Tampa Bay when the Chiefs host the Buccaneers on Monday Night Football. The Chiefs are still the only remaining undefeated team in the league. They’ve had every excuse to slip up with a plethora of injuries, especially on offense, but this team keeps winning. Kansas City is 7-0 even with Patrick Mahomes throwing eight touchdowns to nine interceptions. Mahomes and company beat the Las Vegas Raiders last week 27-20. Mahomes threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns which made him the fastest quarterback to reach 30,000 in just 103 games. The Chiefs have yet to lose against the Raiders since they moved to Las Vegas. Down by just four points, The Raiders had a chance to go up on the Chiefs down by intercepting Mahomes at the Kansas City three. But the Chiefs stood tall and didn’t allow Las Vegas to score on the short field. It set the precedent as Kansas City didn’t trail in the second half. Kansas City are -9-point favorites against the Buccaneers at home tonight.

The Buccaneers got a bad draw to face the defending champions as they are trying to avoid losing their third game in a row. Kurt Cousins went off throwing for 276 yards with an eye-opening four touchdowns. Baker Mayfield threw three touchdowns for 330 yards but he also had two interceptions. Tampa Bay shutout the Falcons in the fourth but it still wasn’t enough for the comeback as the team dropped to .500 on the season.

The Bucs had three turnovers. That didn’t fly against the Falcons and certainly won’t get the job done on the road against the defending champs.

The Golden State Warriors are one of the hottest teams to start the new NBA season with a 5-1 record as they travel to take on the Washington Wizards. The Warriors are going for their fourth win in a row tonight after defeating an old rival in overtime for their last game. Golden State beat the Houston Rockets 127-121 in extras on Saturday. Buddy Hield has been leading the team in scoring this season averaging 22.2 points per game and little changed against the Rockets as he led the team with 27 points. The Warriors got their 14th straight win over Houston but it almost didn’t happen. Golden State led by as much as 31 points at half but the Rockets kept chipping away. Houston really made inroads when it went on a 18-2 run to begin the fourth quarter. Golden State are big 10.5-point favorites tonight but the team can’t afford to take an opponent for granted again especially against a Wizards team they are supposed to beat even on the road. The Milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers play in back-to-back games as the Cavs try to stay perfect on the season.

The Milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers are on completely different trajectories to start the season when they meet on Monday night. Both the Bucks and Cavaliers were supposed to duke it out for one of the top spots in the Eastern Conference with Boston this year. Cleveland has kept up its side of the bargain but Milwaukee must have missed the memo. The Bucks are 1-5 to start the season and have lost five games in a row after winning the season opener against Philadelphia. That has been their only road win and they are coming off a loss to the Cavaliers already when they faced off two nights ago on Saturday. That game was at home for Milwaukee in an incredibly close game which the Cavs won 114-113. Milwaukee lost despite the heroics of Damian Lillard who really turned it on scoring a game-high 41 points. The problem for Milwaukee is that Donovan Mitchell got the last laugh for the Cavaliers.

Mitchell scored 30 points in the win but there was no more a clutch shot in the game than the one he hit with just three-tenths of a second left on the clock. Mitchell hit a clutch jumper for two that proved to be the game winner. Milwaukee got the ball back and Lillard got the last shot of the game with a desperation three but it wasn’t in the cards.

Mitchell’s clutch bucket keeps the Cavaliers undefeated with a 7-0 record to start the season. Now Cleveland is heading home to take on their Central division rivals and the Cavaliers will be -7.5 favorites on Monday night.

Brandon Noel and Wright State will take the court against Lamont Butler and No. 23 Kentucky on Monday.

Wright State will head on the road on Monday night, the opening day of men’s college basketball, to take on the No. 23 ranked team in the country, Kentucky, at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. The Wildcats are under a new head coach for the first time in decades. Mark Pope is taking over for the legendary John Calipari, who is now at Arkansas. Because of that situation and scenario, this team looks vastly different than it did a year ago. All of the team’s projected starting lineup spots by CBS Sports are transfers. It starts in the backcourt with guards Lamont Butler and Otega Oweh.

Butler played last season with San Diego State and was an all-defensive team member in his conference. Oweh was a member of Big 12’s Oklahoma. The frontcourt is led by Dayton transfer Koby Brea, who shoots 49.8% from behind the line. With Brea stars, ex-Wake Forest Demon Deacon Andrew Carr, who is also a versatile three-point threat, and Oklahoma State’s Brandon Garrison, who was a former All-American and averaged 1.5 blocked shots per game.

Purdue hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday night in the season opener for the Boilermakers

The Purdue Boilermakers welcome the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders to Mackey Arena on Monday night in the season opener for both teams. The Boilermakers are coming off a trip to the National Championship game in which they lost to UConn. The Boilermakers were coming off a upset loss to 16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson two years ago, but ran through the tournament last year before running into the Huskies. They were able to make a run thanks in large part to two-time National Player of the Year Zach Edey, but Edey is gone and the Boilermakers will have to show they can win without him. It starts with four straight home games, the last of which will be against No. 2 Alabama in a couple of weeks. Their non-conference schedule also includes No. 18 Marquette, No. 13 Texas A&M and No. 11 Auburn. It is a tough schedule, but first the Boilermakers will look to get their season started off with a win over Islanders.

The Islanders have two preseason ranked teams on their non-conference schedule as they will also play No. 4 Houston in late December.

The Islanders are coming off a good season in which they went 21-11 and won their last seven regular season games. They would lose their first conference tournament game to Nicholls in overtime and then fell to Abilene Christian in the first round of the CIT.
