IMSA Weathertech Championship RaceThe IMSA WeatherTech Championship Race is a professional sports car racing series held in the United States and Canada. It is the top level of sports car racing in North America and is run by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). It is based around a series of endurance races held at tracks such as Sebring, Daytona, Road Atlanta, and Laguna Seca. The series is divided into two classes: GT Daytona (GTD) and GT Le Mans (GTLM). The IMSA WeatherTech Championship Race features a mix of teams and manufacturers from around the world, such as Ferrari, BMW, Acura, Chevrolet, Porsche, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz. Each season features 12 rounds, with teams earning points for their results in each race. At the end of the season, the top teams in each class qualify for the championship playoffs. The champion in each class is crowned at the season-end WeatherTech Championship Race in Monterey, California, which features a 10-hour endurance race that includes four classes competing for the championship. Throughout its history, IMSA's top class has featured some of the most iconic names in motorsports, including Mario Andretti, Tom Kristensen, and Al Unser, Jr. In addition to the series championship, IMSA also awards various racing championships throughout the season, including the Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup, Michelin Pilot Challenge, Prototype Challenge, and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge. The IMSA WeatherTech Championship has seen some of the most memorable moments in sports car racing history. In 2017, the series saw three of the four class titles go to international teams, and the prestigious Rolex 24 at Daytona that year saw a last-lap battle between two legendary sports car racers, Fernando Alonso and Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, that resulted in a dramatic victory for Alonso and team mate Kamui Kobayashi. Throughout its history, the IMSA WeatherTech Championship Race has been home to some of the most competitive and thrilling endurance races in the world, and continues to be one of the most popular motorsports series in North America.
